Common Vestibular Vocabulary and Disorders

• Vertigo: A sensation of whirling and loss of balance.
• Dizziness: Altered sense of balance and place. Lightheaded, faint, or spinning.
• Imbalance: Lack of proportion or relation between corresponding things.
• Equilibrium: A state of physical balance.
• Vestibular System: A portion of the inner ear responsible for our sense of balance and spatial orientation for the purpose of coordinating movement with balance.
• Meniere’s Disease: Disease of the inner ear causing fluctuating hearing loss and episodic vertigo.
• Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: BPPV is a condition causing spinning vertigo following head movement typically while rolling over in bed. This is caused by “crystals” moving into one or more of your semicircular canals and can typically be easily resolved with a simple maneuver in our office.
• Vestibular Migraine: Often mistaken for Meniere’s Disease, vestibular migraine presents with short lived motion sensitivity or episodic vertigo. It is not always present with traditional migraine headache, which leads to confusion over its cause.
• Labyrinthitis: The most severe form of vertigo is viral labrynthitis. Often triggered by the common cold virus which has moved to the inner ear, this disorder damages the balance nerve leading to severe spinning vertigo. Not unlike other viral attacks it can take days or weeks for symptoms to improve.
